Potential ice jam leads to flood watch on Rock River

Spring is still weeks away, but residents along the Rock River need to pay attention to river levels.
The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities has issued a Flood Watch for ice jams for the Rock River at Como, affecting Whiteside County, and the Rock River at Moline, affecting Henry and Rock Island counties. The watch began this morning and is in effect until further notice.
Officials say an ice jam may cause water to infiltrate low-lying areas along the river. As of 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 30, the river was at 10.1 feet and fluctuations due to ice could cause local impact up to minor flood stage. Flood stage is 12 feet and at 11 feet, water affects agricultural land upstream from Moline.
