Greg Hawkes is an American musician and singer best known for being the keyboardist in the band The Cars. Born in Fulton, Maryland in October 1952, Hawkes studied at the Berklee College of Music before joining Martin Mull and his Fabulous Furniture. He played multiple instruments and was a backing vocalist for the band, which formed in 1976.
The Cars released their self-titled debut studio album in 1978, which was certified 6x Platinum in the United States and reached #18 on the charts. Their subsequent albums Candy-O, Panorama, Shake It Up, and Heartbeat City all reached the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart, with Heartbeat City even reaching #1 in New Zealand. The Cars had numerous hits, including “Just What I Needed”, “My Best Friend’s Girl”, “Good Times Roll”, “Shake It Up”, “You Might Think”, and “Drive”.
In addition to his work with The Cars, Hawkes has released two solo albums and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
